Community
In 2009, Yell Group contributed £1.1 million to the communities in which it operates through cash, time and in-kind support.
We believe it is important that our work in the community reflects the needs of our advertisers, our users and our people, and that it enhances our reputation as a responsible company.
Many of our Yellowbook people are involved in our annual United Way fundraising campaign. In 2008, Yellowbook people donated more than $296,000 to the United Way campaign.
Yellowbook won the 2007 Best New Campaign award presented by United Way of south-eastern Pennsylvania in recognition of their outstanding corporate commitment to improving the community.
In Yell UK we have a network of ‘Community Champions’ – volunteers based at offices across the UK who arrange support for local charities through fundraising and in-kind support. By adopting this approach, we are able to support local communities as well as our national charity partners.
Since 1999, Yell people have supported Marie Curie Cancer Care’s Great Daffodil Appeal, helping them to raise more than £21 million to fund Marie Curie nurses. From 2008 we have changed the way we raise money for Marie Curie, moving our support away from the centrally sponsored Great Daffodil Appeal and into more localised, matched funding activities. This will support our Community Champions network and gives our people the opportunity to raise money in any way they want.
The flooding in the Midwestern area of the US in June 2008 affected many of our people, particularly in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, one of our regional hubs. Yellowbook people provided invaluable assistance to the community, from making sandbags for vulnerable areas along waterways, to helping secure temporary shelter for displaced colleagues and their families. They also co-ordinated Yellowbook-wide fundraising activities and were joined by Yell Adworks colleagues in the UK and US in raising money for the relief efforts.
In 2008 Yell Publicidad people donated €14,000 to Entreculturas and Aldeas Infantiles SOS España to assist them with projects supporting human development. In December, Yell Publicidad people donated €2,000 to the Spanish Red Cross to purchase toys for underprivileged children in Madrid. The Company matched this amount.
