Canterbury households urged to recycle old Yellow Pages - 16 November 2001
Householders across the district are being urged to participate in a Yellow Pages recycling campaign which starts when the new edition of the Yellow Pages directory – sporting fluffy chicks on the front cover – is delivered across the area.Canterbury City Council is supporting this year’s Yellow Pages recycling initiative, which aims to collect thousands of old editions of the directory – which show fish on the front cover – and recycle them.
Residents can either put their old Yellow Pages into their kerbside recycling bin or take them to the packaging bank in the car park at Safeway’s in Wincheap.
As an added incentive, The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages, will dedicate an area of young trees in a Woodland Trust woodland to four lucky residents whose directory is selected at random from the collection. To enter, householders should put their name and telephone number clearly on the inside front cover of their old Yellow Pages before recycling it.
City Council recycling officer, Ian Mackenzie, said: “We are delighted to offer a Yellow Pages recycling scheme this year. The link with the Woodland Trust will provide local people with a real incentive to put their old directories to good use. Initiatives like this get everybody thinking about the role they can play in recycling and we hope lots of people get involved.”
Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, added: “Supporting local authorities to recycle directories is a major strategy for Yellow Pages in promoting environment-friendly activities. We are pleased to be working with the Woodland Trust and to offer this initiative to Canterbury City Council – I’m sure it will prove very popular.”
