Households urged to recycle old Yellow Pages and help schools win prizes - 5 December 2001

Households across Sedgefield are being urged to participate in a Yellow Pages recycling campaign, which starts when the new edition of the directory, sporting fluffy chicks on the front cover is delivered across the area in the next few weeks. The campaign aims to collect thousands of old Yellow Pages and recycle them in a borough-wide schools initiative.

Sedgefield Borough Council would like to recycle more directories than ever before and has teamed up with The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages, to challenge local schoolchildren to collect as many old Yellow Pages, displaying fish on the front cover - as possible.

The Directory Recycling Scheme will award £500 to the school which collects the most directories per pupil head.

For householders who do not have a child participating in the schools challenge, old Yellow Pages can be put out with the normal kerbside paper collection or taken to any of Sedgefield’s recycling banks.

In addition to taking part in the competition, selected schools will be invited to work with local artists at Durham WasteWise project to use the old directories to recreate the Yellow Brick Road and life size sculptures of the characters from the Wizard of Oz film, including Dorothy and the Tin Man.

All the old Yellow Pages will be recycled into animal bedding.

Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, said: "Supporting local authorities to recycle directories is a major environmental strategy for Yellow Pages. Schools schemes are always very successful and I’m hoping this initiative will prove an interesting and educational challenge for the schoolchildren in Sedgefield."

Oliver Priestley-Leach, Sedgefield’s waste management officer, said: "The main aim of the competition is to show that recycling can be fun. Hopefully after taking part, people will be inspired to recycle other materials".
