A Grand Prize for Abbots Farm Infant School - 8 February 2002
Abbots Farm Infant School in Rugby has come up trumps in the Yellow Pages schools recycling competition run jointly by Rugby Borough Council and Rokeby Schools Joint Recycling Initiative and supported by The Directory Recycling Scheme.Sponsored by Yellow Pages, the competition offered £1,000 in cash prizes to local schools to reward their recycling efforts. Abbots Farm Infant School excelled in winning both categories of the competition – achieving the highest number of Yellow Pages collected overall and the highest number per pupil, gaining two £500 prizes.
The competition encouraged local schoolchildren to collect as many old Yellow Pages as possible for recycling and save tonnes of paper from going to landfill. More than 4,700 children from twenty-two schools throughout Rugby took on the recycling challenge. Their combined efforts gathered almost 7,500 old Yellow Pages which have now been shredded and recycled for use as animal bedding.
Councillor Holman, portfolio holder for Housing and the Environment, said: “Abbots Farm Infant School has exceeded all expectations in this competition. The children pulled out all the stops by collecting 845 old Yellow Pages which is the equivalent of nearly five per pupil. The school deserves every praise for their huge efforts and a big thank you from the council.”
Recycling organiser with Rokeby Schools Recycling, Bill Lewis, added: “The best aspect of the competition for me was that so many children took part and they were all very enthusiastic. We saw this when we visited the schools to collect their Yellow Pages. I have already been asked by one school whether a similar recycling scheme will be run when the next edition of Yellow Pages is distributed.”
All the schools that participated in the Yellow Pages recycling competition will be given two certificates, one by Yellow Pages and the other by Rugby Borough Council and Rokeby Schools Recycling.
Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages, said: “This has been a fantastic competition and I’m delighted with the results achieved by Abbots Farm Infant School and all the schools that took part. I’d also like to thank the council and Rokeby Schools Recycling for their tremendous support in recycling Yellow Pages directories.”
