A grand prize for Newport school in Yellow Pages competition - 13 March 2002

Pupils at Gaer Infant School in Newport, have come up trumps in a schools recycling competition run by Cardiff Waste Forum, Newport Borough Council and supported by The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages.

The competition offered £1000 in cash prizes to reward their efforts in recycling Yellow Pages. Gaer Infant School excelled in winning the £500 prize for the highest number of Yellow Pages collected overall – 520 - and also won the £500 prize for the highest number collected per head – 2.3 per pupil.

The competition saved tonnes of paper from going to landfill and nearly 2,000 children from seven schools across Newport took on the recycling challenge. Their combined efforts gathered more than 2,000 old Yellow Pages which will be recycled into house insulation by Welsh company, Excel Industries.

At the presentation today, Cllr Glyn Jarvis, deputy mayor, said: “All the schools involved in the scheme have exceeded all expectations in this competition. Children from around Newport pulled out all the stops by collecting their old Yellow Pages. All the schools, as well as the winner, deserve every praise for their huge efforts and a big thank you from the council.”

All the schools that participated in the Yellow Pages recycling competition will be given a certificate.

Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, added: “This has been a fantastic competition and I’m delighted with the results achieved by Gaer Infant School and all the schools that took part. I’d also like to thank the council and Cardiff Waste Forum for their tremendous support in recycling Yellow Pages directories.”

The South Wales Yellow Pages recycling campaign is a partnership project between the four local authorities; Cardiff Waste Forum, The Directory Recycling Scheme, CYLCH (Wales Community Recycling Network), Severnside Recycling, Wastesavers Recycling, Careers Wales, Excel Industries and The Environment Agency Wales.
