Householders encouraged to recycle old Yellow Pages - 19 July 2002
Oxfordshire County Council is again teaming up with The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages, to offer facilities for recycling old Yellow Pages directories, following the success of a similar campaign last year.Special Yellow Pages recycling bins will be located at Redbridge waste recycling centre and at Tesco’s supermarket at Lockhead Close, Banbury. Householders are being encouraged to use the bins for recycling last year’s edition of Yellow Pages, which featured fluffy chicks on the cover. The new directory – sporting sandcastles on the front cover – will be delivered across Oxfordshire from the end of July.
Old directories will be recycled into animal bedding for use in stables and farms. Signs advising ‘how to turn yellow into green’ have gone up at the participating outlets to draw attention to the campaign.
Last year, more than ten tonnes of Yellow Pages were recycled, but many more directories were simply thrown out and sent to landfill. Adam Symons, waste strategy manager with Oxfordshire County Council, said: “Yellow Pages directories have a lot of value if they are recycled. If everyone recycled their old directory, we could save hundreds of tonnes from going to landfill in Oxfordshire.”
Councillor Anne Purse, executive member for Strategic Planning and Waste Management, said: “As the Yellow Pages will be recycled into animal bedding, it is important that they are put into the special containers we are providing and not added to the council’s regular kerbside collection.”
Oxfordshire’s initiative is being supported by The Directory Recycling Scheme through provision of the recycling bins. Scheme co-ordinator Adam Billiald said: “Supporting local authorities to recycle directories is a major environmental strategy for Yellow Pages. I encourage everyone to do their bit and take their directory along to one of the recycling banks.”
