Recycle Yellow Pages to win a prize - 23 August 2002

Householders across Suffolk Coastal are being urged to participate in a Yellow Pages recycling campaign which starts when the new edition of the directory – showing sandcastles on the front cover - is delivered across the area.

Suffolk Coastal District Council is hoping to beat last year’s impressive collection of nearly 14 tonnes of old directories and is working to collect thousands of old Yellow Pages – featuring fluffy chicks on the cover - for recycling via special collection banks.

The campaign has been boosted by a grant from The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages, and offers householders the chance to win £25 shopping vouchers. All they have to do is to put their name and telephone number on the inside front cover of the old directory before popping it into the recycling bin. Lucky winners will be drawn at random.

Residents are being asked to take their old Yellow Pages to one of six special recycling banks at the following locations across the district: Solar, Hamilton Road, Felixstowe; Woodbridge Community Hall, Station Road; Saxmundham Market Place, off the High Street; High Street car park, Leiston; Fort Green, High Street, Aldeburgh; Tesco, Ropes Drive, Kesgrave.

Cllr Chris Slemmings, Cabinet Member for the Environment said: “Three local councils have joined forces for this initiative and been awarded a grant from The Directory Recycling Scheme so that a network of banks can be installed in Suffolk Coastal, Ipswich and Mid Suffolk areas. The grant also enables us to offer the prize vouchers to eight lucky residents.

“Last year, the people of this district once again showed their commitment to protecting the environment and recycling by putting a staggering 13.74 tonnes of old directories into our special banks and I hope that this year it will be even more,” added Cllr Slemmings.

Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, said: “Supporting local authorities to recycle directories is a major environmental strategy for Yellow Pages. I encourage everyone to do their bit and take their directory along to one of the recycling banks.”

Any resident wanting more information about this initiative or about recycling can call Suffolk Coastal’s recycling team on 01394 444306 or visit the Council’s website: www.suffolkcoastal.gov.uk/envhealth/recycleinfo.html

Yellow Pages can also be recycled in the cardboard banks at Foxhall and Felixstowe but these will not be included in the prize draw.
