Rhonnda Cynon Taff schools turn Yellow Pages into cash - 15 March 2002

Pupils at Porth Community Comprehensive School and SS Gabriel and Raphael RC Primary School in Rhonnda Cynon Taff, have come up trumps in a schools recycling competition run by Cardiff Waste Forum, Rhonnda Cynon Ta Taff Council and supported by The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages.

The competition offered £1000 in cash prizes to reward their efforts in recycling Yellow Pages. Porth Community Comprehensive School excelled in winning the £500 prize for the highest number of Yellow Pages collected overall – 1072. SS Gabriel and Raphael RC Primary School won the £500 prize for the highest number collected per head – 3.6 per pupil.

The competition saved tonnes of paper from going to landfill and more than 5,500 children from 32 schools across Rhonnda Cynon Taff took on the recycling challenge. Their combined efforts gathered almost 4,500 old Yellow Pages which will be recycled into house insulation by local company Excel Industries.

At the presentation held today at The Pavillions, Clydach Vale, Councillor Syd Morgan, cabinet member for special projects with Rhonnda Cynon Taff Council, said: “All the schools involved in the scheme have exceeded all expectations in this competition. Children from across Rhonnda Cynon Taff have shown they fully support our recycling efforts and have pulled out all the stops by collecting their old Yellow Pages. All the schools, as well as the winners, deserve every praise for their huge efforts and a big thank you from the council.”

All the schools that participated in the Yellow Pages recycling competition will be given a certificate.

Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, said: “This has been a fantastic competition and I’m delighted with the results achieved by Porth Comprehensive, SS Gabriel and Raphael Primary and all the schools that took part. I’d also like to thank the council and Cardiff Waste Forum for their tremendous support in recycling Yellow Pages directories.”
