Strabane District takes on the Yellow Woods challenge - 21 November 2002

Strabane District Council is encouraging local schools and residents to make a success of the Yellow Woods Challenge – an exciting new schools recycling initiative run by Yellow Pages, The Directory Recycling Scheme and the Woodland Trust in association with the Council.

Up to 1000 schools across the UK will compete to win cash prizes from a total prize fund of £36,000. All participating schools have to do is collect old Yellow Pages – the ones with chicks, fish, sunflowers or walking fingers on the cover – when the new directories are delivered from the end of November. Strabane District Council will arrange for all the old directories to be collected and recycled into egg boxes.

Strabane District Council’s Yellow Woods Challenge organiser, Michael Pickles, said: “We’re delighted to be taking part in the Yellow Woods Challenge. It’s a simple, fun and educational competition that will benefit schools and the environment, diverting thousands of Yellow Pages away from landfill. We would encourage all residents to support their nearest participating school by giving their old Yellow Pages to an attending pupil.”

The Yellow Woods Challenge offers something for all schools. Locally the school that collects the most Yellow Pages will win £300 and all schools will automatically be entered into the UK Finals for a chance to win a top prize of £2,000. All participating schools will receive a certificate and an education pack to bring the Challenge to life in the classroom.

Richard Duggleby, head of external relations for Yell, the publisher of Yellow Pages, said: “The Yellow Woods Challenge aims to educate young people about the environment. We hope the Challenge will show that doing even the smallest things can make a real difference to our world.”

The Yellow Woods Challenge also supports the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. For every pound awarded to schools by Yellow Pages in prize money, a matching pound will be donated to the Woodland Trust to help keep native woodland alive.
