Telford Wrekin school turn Yellow Pages into cash - 17 April 2002
Pupils at Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School, Suttonhill, and Lilleshall Primary School, Lilleshall, have come up trumps in a schools recycling competition run by Telford & Wrekin Council and supported by The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages.The competition offered £500 in cash prizes to reward their efforts in recycling Yellow Pages. Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School excelled in winning the £250 prize for the highest number of Yellow Pages collected overall – 581. Lilleshall Primary School won the £250 prize for the highest number collected per head – 2.3 directories per pupil.
The competition saved tonnes of paper from going to landfill and more than 12,030 children from 44 schools across the area took on the recycling challenge. Their combined efforts gathered almost 6,277 old Yellow Pages which will be recycled into animal bedding.
Anne Tuckley, recycling officer with Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School and Lilleshall Primary School pulled out all the stops and exceeded all expectations in this competition. The schools deserve every praise for their huge efforts and a big thank you from the council.”
All the schools that participated in the Yellow Pages recycling competition will be given a certificate.
Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, said: “This has been a fantastic competition and I’m delighted with the results achieved by Sir Alexander Fleming, Lilleshall Primary and all the other schools that took part. I’d also like to thank the council for their tremendous support in recycling Yellow Pages directories.”
