Whittlesey households urged to recycle old Yellow Pages in special banks - 9 August 2002
Householders in the Whittlesey area are being urged to recycle their old Yellow Pages as part of a new initiative being run at the town’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).The campaign is being run by Cambridgeshire County Council and supported by The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages.
The aim is to collect and recycle thousands of old Peterborough Yellow Pages, which feature fluffy chicks on the front cover. The new edition of the Peterborough Yellow Pages directory, showing sandcastles on the front cover, has just been delivered to households. If successful, the scheme could be expanded to the rest of Cambridgeshire in time for the delivery of the new Cambridge Yellow Pages in March 2003.
The special directory recycling bank clearly displays Yellow Pages recycling stickers and will remain at the Whittlesey site until further notice.
All Yellow Pages collected will be taken to Newslitter Ltd in Harrow, Middlesex, where they will be recycled into animal bedding.
Mark Shelton, recycling officer for Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Throughout Cambridgeshire and Peterborough there is the potential to save a huge number of Yellow Pages from landfill. Collecting and recycling the directories will help us reach our overall recycling target of 33 per cent in Cambridgeshire by 2004. We hope that having this special bank will be a great encouragement to our residents to recycle their old Yellow Pages, and that the scheme is successful enough to expand it for March next year.”
Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, said: “Supporting local authorities to recycle directories is a major environmental strategy for Yellow Pages. I encourage everyone to do their bit and take their directory along to one of the recycling banks.”
Householders who cannot get to Whittlesey HWRC or who live outside the Peterborough Yellow Pages catchment area and have an old directory should bear in mind that Yellow Pages can also be safely home composted. This can be done by simply ripping out the pages, scrunching them up and mixing them with other green household waste.
