Householders urged to go green and recycle old Yellow Pages - 14 January 2003
Householders across North Yorkshire are being urged to go green and recycle their old Yellow Pages to help protect the environment.A Yellow Pages recycling campaign has been launched in the county with homeowners being encouraged to recycle their old directories as soon as the new editions of the Middlesbrough and York directories – sporting sand castles on the front cover – are delivered.
The campaign is being run by North Yorkshire County Council and supported by The Directory Recycling Scheme, which is sponsored by Yellow Pages. The aim is to collect thousands of old Yellow Pages – featuring fluffy chicks on the front cover - and recycle them in special collection banks.
The campaign has been boosted by a grant from The Directory Recycling Scheme to North Yorkshire County Council and throughout the year, banks clearly displaying Yellow Pages recycling stickers will be located at the household waste sites in:
Hambleton and Richmondshire area
· Catterick Bridge, Sowerby, Stokesley, Leeming Bar, Leyburn, Tholthorpe, Northallerton and West Tanfield
Harrogate and Craven area
· Stonefall, Settle, Ripon and Skibeden
Selby area
· Tadcaster and Selby
Scarborough and Ryedale area
· Malton, Whitby, Noton, Wombleton, Thornton Dale, Mickleby and Seamer Carr
All the old Yellow Pages will be recycled into board.
Andy Holmes, waste management officer (strategy and development) with North Yorkshire County Council, said: “Throughout North Yorkshire, there is the potential to save tonnes of old Yellow Pages from landfill – if placed end to end, these would stretch from York to Hartlepool. We hope that having these special banks will be a great encouragement to our residents to recycle their old Yellow Pages.”
Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, added: “Supporting local authorities to recycle directories is a major environmental strategy for Yellow Pages. I encourage everyone to do their bit and take their old directory along to one of the recycling banks.”
