In total, almost 1,400 schools across the UK took on the Yellow Woods Challenge last year, recycling directories and learning about the environment while competing to win cash prizes from Yellow Pages. And for every pound awarded to schools throughout the Challenge, Yellow Pages gave a matching pound to the Woodland Trust, raising £50,000 to help the Trust protect native woodland.

Richard Duggleby, head of external relations at Yell, the publisher of Yellow Pages directories, said: “The results of the 2003/04 Challenge have exceeded all our expectations. It is fantastic to see such commitment to recycling and conservation among schoolchildren, teachers and local authorities. I’m already looking forward to next year’s finals!”

Mrs Karin Heap, headteacher with Chapel Road School, said: “I am so proud of the children for winning the UK Finals of the Yellow Woods Challenge. I’d like to thank the families and local community who helped us collect so many Yellow Pages directories. We have recently been raising funds to improve the school environment and the money we’ve won will give a tremendous boost to the project, enabling us to build a raised sensory flower bed and seating in the playground.”
