Yell gets second 'BIG TICK' mark - 29 June 2004

Yell, the international directories business based in Reading, has been awarded a BIG TICK mark by Business in the Community (BITC) for its flagship schools environmental initiative, the Yellow Woods Challenge, for the second year running.

The BIG TICK is awarded to companies that are able to demonstrate the positive impact their business has on society through community programmes and business practices. The honour is awarded to companies shortlisted in the BITC’s annual Awards for Excellence and Yell is this year a finalist in the cause related marketing category for its environmental campaign. The announcement comes at the same time as new research showing that 51 per cent of UK households now recycle their old Yellow Pages directories – up from 46 per cent last year.*

John Condron, chief executive of Yell, said: “We’re delighted to be a finalist in the Business in the Community Awards and be recognised with a BIG TICK for the second year running. We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and managing the impact of our business on society has always been of paramount importance to us.”

The Yellow Woods Challenge a simple, educational and fun environmental initiative run by Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust working with local authorities across the UK. Schoolchildren simply bring old Yellow Pages directories to school for recycling in return for free environmental teaching packs and the opportunity to win cash prizes for their school.

Julia Cleverdon, chief executive of Business in the Community, said: “We are absolutely delighted to celebrate the achievements of award winning UK BIG TICK companies who have gone through this rigorous and independent assessment. As Examples of Excellence, their success reflects the growing commitment within business to integrate responsible business practice across the marketplace, workplace, environment and community.”

The winners of Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence 2004 will be announced at a Gala Dinner, to be held at the Royal Albert Hall, on Tuesday July 6, 2004.
