Yellow move means we're still going green - 26 October 2004
Following hot on the heels of the Yellow Woods Challenge in local primary schools, environment chiefs have announced that Yellow Pages directories can now be recycled across the whole of East Renfrewshire. In addition to the schools collections, Yellow Pages directories can now be recycled in the paper kerbside collection and at paper bays of local recycling points, meaning that even more waste will be spared from landfill each year by green minded locals.
When the Yellow Woods Challenge took place in local schools recently, 6,102 copies of Yellow Pages – equating to ten tonnes - were spared from landfill. Sixteen local schools competed in the Challenge – the simple, educational and fun environmental initiative run by Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust working with East Renfrewshire Council.
The top local honours go to Calderwood Lodge Primary School for collecting 861 old directories (4.86 per pupil). St. Mark’s Primary School came second, whilst third place goes to Uplawmoor Primary School.
Kirk, the campaign mascot, will be heading back to the area to present Calderwood Lodge with its £300 prize. Yellow Pages will also dedicate a tree in a Woodland Trust wood to the school for collecting the most directories in total.
Kirk will join Councillor Alan Lafferty at Calderwood Lodge Primary School this Friday at 12.50 pm for the presentation. You are invited to send a reporter and/or photographer to cover this event.
