Schools gear up to take part in recycling challenge - 26 May 2005
Twenty-eight schools across North Lincolnshire are to compete for cash prizes in the Yellow Woods Challenge – the simple, educational and fun environmental campaign run by Yellow Pages and in partnership with the Woodland Trust and North Lincolnshire Council. The council is urging schoolchildren, their families and friends to bring old Yellow Pages directories to school by July 11, 2005, to be recycled.
The Challenge aims to get children into the recycling habit when they are young and to teach them about paper, recycling and woodland conservation.
The schools that collect the most directories per pupil will win cash prizes from Yellow Pages, and for every pound awarded to schools, a matching pound will be given to the Woodland Trust to support ‘Tree For All’, its new tree planting campaign.
Cllr Arthur Bunyan, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: “This is the second year that we have been involved in recycling Yellow Pages directories. The council would like to encourage people to come and do their bit for the environment. The campaign is very worthwhile as it helps the Woodland Trust restore and improve woodland. It also increases children’s appreciation and understanding of the environment and we hope it will become something teachers, parents and pupils will be involved in each year”.
Richard Duggleby, head of external relations at Yell, the publisher of Yellow Pages directories, said: “Since 2002, more than half a million schoolchildren have taken on the Yellow Woods Challenge. This year, we expect 300,000 pupils across the UK to have fun recycling Yellow Pages directories and learning about the environment.“
Local people can also recycle their old Yellow Pages directory by putting it into their blue kerbside recycling collection box or any paper bank across the region.
