Schools join in with Yellow Pages recycling competition - 31 October 2005

SIXTEEN North Dorset Schools have registered to participate in the first ever Yellow Pages Recycling Competition.

Run jointly by North Dorset District Council and the Yellow Pages Directory Recycling Scheme, the competition encourages local children to recycle their old Yellow Pages directory and help their school win a cash prize.

The competition will run for six weeks, from 7 November, and the school collecting the most directories per pupil will win £300, with runners-up receiving prizes of £200 and £100. As an added incentive, one child from each school will be picked at random to win a gift voucher.

The Council has received a grant from the Yellow Pages Directory Recycling Scheme to cover the prizes. Once collected the directories will be recycled and turned into animal bedding.

As well as the new schools recycling competition, householders can recycle their old Yellow Pages directories via their green kerbside boxes or at one of the following recycling banks during November and December:

· Marsh & Ham car park, Blandford
· Tesco’s car park, Blandford
· Chantry Fields Car Park, Gillingham
· Tesco’s car park, Shaftesbury
· Station Road car park, Stalbridge
· Station Road car park, Sturminster Newton

Sarah Wasey, the Council’s Policy Officer Recycling and Waste Management, said: “We are really pleased that so many schools in the District have entered the competition, it’s a brilliant way to educate children about recycling and give them the chance to win some cash for their school.”
