Hertsmere schools recycle old Yellow Pages into cash - 30 March 2006

Wroxham School in Potters Bar is celebrating winning the top prize in the Yellow Pages schools recycling competition, organised by Hertsmere Borough Council.

The Yellow Pages Directory Recycling Scheme offered cash prizes to schools for collecting old directories for recycling into animal bedding.

Nine schools across Borehamwood, Potters Bar and Radlett took part in the competition and collected over 1,000 old Yellow Pages directories.

Cash prizes are awarded for the highest number of directories collected per pupil. First prize of £300 goes to Wroxham School who collected an average 1.31 old Yellow Pages per pupil. Cranborne School in Potters Bar came second and wins £200, while Oakmere School in Potters Bar took third place and receives £100.

Olivia Newbutt, Recycling Officer with Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “The children really got into the competitive spirit and enjoyed bringing lots of old directories to school. It is really encouraging to see them so interested in recycling.”

Richard Duggleby, head of external relations at Yell, publisher of Yellow Pages directories, said: “I would like to congratulate the winners and thank everyone who took part in this fun recycling activity. I am also very grateful to Hertsmere Borough Council for organising the competition with the schools and to Essex Reclamation for recycling them into animal bedding.”
