Recycling old Yellow Pages nets £300 for Portfield School - 9 February 2006
Schools in Christchurch have been seeing yellow over the past few weeks as they have collected thousands of out-of-date Yellow Pages directories to recycle in a competition organised by Christchurch Council and the Yellow Pages Directory Recycling Scheme.Ten schools in the borough took part collecting 3,369 directories between them. As there was a great difference in the sizes of the participating schools, the number of Yellow Pages directories collected per pupil decided who was to be the winner.
Portfield School Over-16s in Magdalen Lane had the highest ratio of directories per pupil, collecting 166 old Yellow Pages directories between the ten pupils at the school, making a ratio of 16.6 per pupil.
In second place was Burton Day Nursery with 351 directories between 77 pupils, a ratio of 4.6. In third place came The Priory School with a ratio of 3.9, although they collected the greatest number of directories with 865 between the 221 pupils.
Portfield School were delighted to receive the cheque for £300 from Yellow Pages and will now consult the pupils on what they would like to do with the money.
Burton Day Nursery has won a runners-up cheque of £200 and The Priory School has been awarded £100.
