Luck of the Draw - 13 July 2000

Norwich mother of two, Laura Bradshaw, is celebrating being the lucky winner in a national competition run by Yellow Pages and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The prize - an original watercolour by Liz Pepperell - depicts the artist’s impression of the award-winning ‘Sun Awareness’ garden exhibited by Yellow Pages and Marie Curie at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Mrs Bradshaw was today presented with her unique prize at Marie Curie’s fundraising office in Norwich. "I was thrilled to bits when I learned I had won the painting," she said. "It was actually one of my favourite gardens at Chelsea and I’d taken some photos to get enlarged and framed."

Jo Purrier, Area Field Sales Manager, Yellow Pages, congratulated Mrs Bradshaw and noted: "We’d commissioned the painting to illustrate our leaflets for visitors to the flower show. Considering that around 170,000 people from all over the UK visit Chelsea, I’m obviously delighted that someone in my area won our free prize draw competition."

The garden was designed to convey a serious message about the dangers of over-exposure to the sun and featured seating in areas shaded by a canopy and leafy trees.

"It’s very important for everyone to remain sun aware," explains Amba Kumar, Norwich Area Fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care. "Especially when we have a poor summer like this year’s, many people put themselves at risk from over-exposure as soon as we get some sunshine.

"Skin cancer is a problem in this country so next time we have a hot sunny day, do remember to apply sunscreen, wear a hat or seek some shade during the hottest parts of the day."
