Please Darling, No More Socks Or Smellies For Christmas This Year! - 7 December 2000

One in five men said the worst present that they had ever received for Christmas was socks, according to the latest research by NOP(1) Research conducted by NOP Solutions, 10-12 November 2000. Base: nationally representative sample of GB adults aged 15+ (1000)., on behalf of Yell.com. When asked what men did not want for Christmas this year, the resounding reply was SMELLIES.

Women, on the other hand, seem to be far easier to please, with 20% claiming that they had never received a bad Christmas present. A further 21% said that they would be happy just to receive any present this year.

Top of the lads’ Christmas lists this year is a car, closely followed by a holiday and a computer. DVDs, one of this year’s hottest buys, came a close fourth. Of the women who knew what they wanted for Christmas, jewellery came out top, with a holiday, clothes and a new car following close behind.

Among the more unusual Christmas presents received, the list included, whisky flavoured toothpaste, a left-handed pepper mill, disposable underwear, a book on combine harvesters and a dolphin.

What do people really think Christmas is all about?
  • 57% think Christmas is just a good excuse to have the family to visit and eat a lot of food
  • 51% of people never go to church over Christmas
  • 16% of the people asked go to church every year (65% of which were over 45 yrs)

And lastly, if people really can’t face another Christmas in the UK, the most populate alternative Christmas destination is America or Australia. However, the largest percentage of respondents would still prefer to stay at home.
