The capital’s sites set the standard in the Yell UK Web Awards 2000 - 13 June 2000

London dedicated web sites are definitely the place to be this summer as three of the capital’s top ‘net destinations are named finalists in the prestigious annual Yell UK Web Awards 2000. Nominated by Internet users and judged by leading players in the online world, the London hotshots are:
  • London4kids.com & Timeout.com - wiping the floor as the only two finalists in the Best Entertainment Site award
  • mywapworld.com - one of three finalists for the Most Innovative Use of Technology category

London4kids.com is the answer to parents’ school holiday prayers, with information on everything that may be of interest to bored school kids and frazzled parents. Whether it’s locating child-friendly restaurants, finding flicks that won’t give the little ones nightmares, or even giving advice on coping with sibling rivalry, this site has it all. It even offers a diary facility to help parents and their children plan their holiday activities and a weather check to make sure days out aren’t ruined by an unexpected downpour.

Long the Capital’s number one what’s on guide, Timeout is now making an impact online with its Timeout.com site. Offering all the editorial quality Londoners have come to expect from the Timeout stable, the web site also gives a depth of content beyond the magazine including online city guides of some of the hottest destinations from Madrid to Moscow, Shanghai to Sydney. For those on the festival trail this summer, there’s a mountain of information on V2000, Glastonbury and many others or for the avaricious reader an online back catalogue of the magazine’s interviews over the last 30 years, from Yoko Ono to Zoe Ball.

If organising a night out with your mates is sometimes more effort than it’s worth, mywapworld.com is a site that uses the latest mobile and web technology to do all that hard work for you. The Soho service, accessible online and through WAP phones, has an exhaustive list of pubs and clubs with reviews and information on each. It let’s you create a location map to arrange when and where to meet your friends and sends them an email or text message to their phone to give them the details. If that wasn’t enough, the site can even get you on the guest list of selected venues, give you queue jump passes or sort out your transport home.

"Londoners are becoming spoilt for choice on the Web," commented Robert Dwek, New Media Editor at Marketing Week and a Yell UK Web Award Judge. "All three of these Yell Award finalists have come up with killer sites - not only do they look great, they answer real needs for real people, whether you’re looking for a top night out on the town or the ultimate family outing. The capital is certainly setting the standard the rest of the UK."

The winners will be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony, hosted by Jonathon Ross on 11 July at the London Studios.
