BBC and ITV go head-to-head in the Yell.com/Awards 2001 - 10 September 2001

Following the fierce ratings war over Eastenders and Coronation Street, the BBC and ITV are now rivals online as well as on the television. Out of thousands of nominations, they are among the six websites shortlisted for the Best Media Site in the Yell.com/Awards 2001 - the people’s choice of the ‘best on the Net’.

The shortlisted sites for the Best Media Site are bbc.co.uk, itn.co.uk, manchesteronline.co.uk, farmgate.co.uk, preciousonline.co.uk and spectator.co.uk. These websites have now entered the second phase of the judging process and a panel of high profile media judges will decide which will win a prestigious Yell.com/Award 2001.

The Yell.com/Awards acknowledge well-known news channels itn.co.uk and bbc.co.uk, alongside preciousonline.co.uk, a site specifically for ethnic women, and farmgate.co.uk. Although farmers may not be thought of as the most net-savvy, farmgate.co.uk enables people in rural areas to keep up-to-date on rural news, such as the latest foot and mouth developments.

John Condron, CEO of Yell, said: “It’s been another great year for the Yell.com/Awards and with an incredible 50% increase in nominations. The Websites that have been shortlisted in the Best Media Site category should be proud of this achievement - they truly do represent the people’s choice of the best on the Net.”

The judges now face the difficult task of selecting one winner in each of the twelve categories. The winning Websites will be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony, hosted by Graham Norton, at the Atlantis Gallery in London on 3 October 2001. Sonique and Talvin Singh will be performing at the awards ceremony.
