It’s a sprint to the finish for sports sites at the Yell.com/Awards 2001 - 10 September 2001

Out of thousands of nominations, six websites have been shortlisted for the Best Sports site in the Yell.com/Awards 2001- the people’s choice of the ‘best on the Net’. Covering a wide range of sports from Formula One to athletics, the nominations certainly show the UK is a nation of sports lovers.

The shortlisted sites for the Best Sport Site are sportinglife.com, rangers.co.uk, astonvil-fc.co.uk, ukathleticsorg, f1fanclub.com and golfgo.co.uk. These websites have now entered the second phase of the judging process in which a panel of high profile media judges will decide which will win a prestigious Yell.com/Award 2001.

The shortlisted sites illustrate that the UK’s sporting interest does not stop at football and rugby, but that a wide variety of sports enjoy support. For example, www.sportinglife.com, provides a wider interest sports site offering all the latest sports news and a betting zone where surfers can place football and horse racing bets.

John Condron, CEO of Yell, said: “It’s been another great year for the Yell.com/Awards and with an incredible 50% increase in nominations. The Websites that have been shortlisted in the Best Sports Site category should be proud of this achievement - they truly do represent the people’s choice of the best on the Net.”

The judges now face the difficult task of selecting one winner in each of the twelve categories. The winning Websites will be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony, hosted by Graham Norton, at the Atlantis Gallery in London on 3 October 2001. Sonique and Talvin Singh will be performing at the awards ceremony.
