Men search for bargins and romance on the internet - 17 May 2001

One in ten men spend over £500 through the internet every six months, according to recent research Source: Taylor Nelson independent survey on behalf of Yell.com. This suggests that UK men have spent at least £160 million pounds over the internet so far this year Based on 23 million adults in Britain accessing the internet and 57% of those users being male. (Figures from January 2001 National Statistics Omnibus) 25% of men surveyed have bought online and one in ten men have spend over £500 on the internet in the last six months.(Figures from Taylor Nelson independent survey on behalf of Yell.com) .

The research was commissioned by Yell.com as part of the launch of this year’s Yell.com/Awards. Nominations for the Yell.com/Awards open on May 21, offering UK web users the chance to vote online for the ‘best on the net’ at www.yell.com/awards. Now in their sixth year, the Yell.com/Awards are the only internet awards where nominations come directly from internet users.

As well as using the interet for shopping bargains, the research reveals that men spend a susbstantial amount of time surfing the net looking for romance. Online dating services and chat rooms were visited more frequently by men than women.

The research also showed that, contrary to popular opinion, women visit games sites just as frequently as men, with 18 per cent surfing the net for games – so girlie rather than gory games may make the shortlist in this year’s Yell.com/Awards.

John Condron, CEO Yell, said: “These awards recognise the real winners on the net as they reflect the opinion of UK users and as such are the real people’s choice. We want this year’s Yell.com/Awards to reward those sites that have captured the imagination of the UK public and the true spirit of the internet in 2001.”
