Preparing for the big day - 9 March 2001
Pupils from schools in the Reading area are gearing up for the Success in Business event in May, by attending Presentation Skills Workshops at Yellow Pages’ Queens Walk headquarters. The workshops encourage pupils to consider what makes a good presenter, their audience’s expectations and what it will be like speaking from the stage in the Hexagon theatre.
Having looked at the structure of a good presentation and creating effective slides, the pupils then prepare and give a five-minute presentation. The groups are encouraged to give feedback on one another’s work.
The pupils of Hugh Faringdon, who attended on March 1, found the workshop very helpful.
Teacher Pat Williams, said the most useful part of the workshop for the pupils was “experiencing a professional presentation, working in a business environment and the opportunity to practise.”
Yellow Pages Success in Business is an event open to all secondary schools in the greater Reading area. Teams are required to:
· Link with a local business
· Define its purpose, the factors that have determined its geographical location and how this affects it
· Research a problem that the business has experienced in the last year and report how it was solved
· Identify and investigate a new or ongoing problem and identify possible solutions for the business
· Prepare a written presentation of their project
· Prepare a display for exhibition at the final event
· Prepare and deliver a10-minute oral presentation on the project to a panel of judges and audience at the final event
Yellow Pages has sponsored Success in Business since 1992 and this year’s event will take place in the Hexagon on Tuesday, May 22.
