Six Web sites hit the holiday hot spots at the Yell.com/Awards 2001 - 10 September 2001

Out of thousands of nominations, six websites have been shortlisted for the Best Travel and Leisure Site in the Yell.com/Awards 2001- the people’s choice of the ‘best on the Net’. Travel and Leisure sites received the most nominations of any category, polling one fifth of the total number of votes cast by the UK public.

With holidays at the forefront of people’s minds, this category benefited from its seasonal appeal during the nomination period. The shortlisted sites vary from the infamous lastminute.com, offering all round travel information and booking services, to coventgardenlife.co.uk, a website dedicated to information on all the shows, hotels and sites in the Covent Garden area.

Reflecting recent travel research conducted by Yell.com showing that the UK is a popular holiday destination, the shortlisted sites coventgardenlife.co.uk and www.escapetotheedge.co.uk, a Scottish travel site, both made the final cut.

Other sites shortlisted in the Travel and Leisure category included: whatsonwhen.com, go-nowtravel.com and travel.telegraph.co.uk. The shortlisted sites have now entered the second phase of the judging process and a panel of high profile media judges will decide which will win a prestigious Yell.com/Award 2001.

John Condron, CEO of Yell, said: “It’s been another great year for the Yell.com/Awards and with an incredible 50% increase in nominations. The Websites that have been shortlisted in the Best Travel and Leisure Site category should be proud of this achievement - they truly do represent the people’s choice of the best on the Net.”

The judges must now face the difficult task of selecting one winner in each of the twelve categories. The winning Websites will be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony, hosted by Graham Norton, at the Atlantis Gallery in London on 3 October 2001. Sonique and Talvin Singh will be performing at the awards ceremony.
