Snaith Primary School squares up against BBC at the Yell.com/Awards 2001 - 10 September 2001

The website of Snaith Primary, a small school in East Yorkshire, has been shortlisted alongside the might of the BBC in the Yell.com/Awards 2001. Six websites have been shortlisted from the thousands of nominations received for the Best Education Site category in the Yell.com/Awards- the people’s choice of the ‘best on the Net’.

The shortlisted sites for the Best Education Site are bbc.co.uk/revision, snaithprimary.eril.net, bbc.co.uk/science, studentuk.com, learn.co.uk and bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish. Recent research conducted by Yell.com revealed that education sites are the most frequently visited, so it’s little wonder the award is so hotly contested.

The shortlisted sites reflect the ways in which the internet can enhance learning. ‘Thinking Things’, Snaith Primary School’s website (snaithprimary.eril.net), encourages children to find out more about life for the Vikings or the Ancient Egyptians, while the BBC’s learning English site (bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish) helps people around the world to improve their language skills. The shortlist also encompasses sites such as studentuk.com, which helps students get to grips with the practicalities of student life.

John Condron, CEO of Yell, said: “It’s been another great year for the Yell.com/Awards with an incredible 50% increase in nominations. The Websites that have been shortlisted in the Best Education and Youth Site category should be proud of this achievement - they truly do represent the people’s choice of the best on the Net.”

The judges now face the difficult task of selecting one winner in each of the twelve categories. The winning Web sites will be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony, hosted by Graham Norton, at the Atlantis Gallery in London on 3 October 2001. Sonique and Talvin Singh will be performing at the awards ceremony.
