Yell enjoys "munch and learn" brainfood with MaST - 30 March 2001

MaST International, a consultancy and training company with over 30 years' experience in management and skills development, will be providing free training for employees of international directories business Yell in Slough, as part of national ‘Learning at Work Day’ on 17th May.

Aptly titled ‘Munch & Learn’, the workshops are built around meal and snack breaks throughout the working day and aim to help employees develop their skills in bite size chunks of one-hour sessions as part of the nationwide focus on learning in the workplace.

The day’s schedule begins with the ‘Red-Blue’ exercise, which explores the skills of co-operation and competition in the workplace. With the aim of achieving the higher positive score, the winning group is the one that possesses the greatest powers of negotiation.

Following this is a ‘Cave Rescue’, a dilemma-orientated exercise based around a fictional experiment involving six volunteers living underground in a cave system in order to study human behaviour in confined spaces. The volunteers raise the alarm when falling rocks trap them, causing a dangerous rise in water level, but the rescue team can only save one person at a time. The workshop’s participants must decide, based on their individual biographical sheets, in which order the volunteers are rescued.

The final workshop is entitled ‘Stress Management’ and is designed to inform its participants about the positive and negative aspects of stress. Candidates are asked to fill out a comprehensive questionnaire that sheds light on their own pressure drivers.

MaST International consultant, Peter Ross said: “Here at MaST International we hold national Learning at Work Day in very high regard because it is vital that all employees are afforded the opportunity to focus on developing their skills. Yell’s employees will enjoy a series of learning workshops that will advance their skills and force them to challenge some of their preconceptions.”

John Condron, Yell’s Chief Executive, commented: “We are very much looking forward to Learning at Work Day and the insight and guidance that a company such as MaST International will provide. Their learning workshops will deal with a range of interesting ideas which will be of great benefit to our employees’ broadening horizons.”

Learning at Work Day (May 17), now in its fourth year, is organised annually by the charity Campaign for Learning and forms part of Adult Learners’ Week. It exists to raise awareness of the important role that the workplace plays in learning and to encourage employers to provide fun learning opportunities for all levels of staff.
