Yell team aims for peak mountain performance - 13 August 2002

An intrepid team of adventure seekers from Reading-based Yell, the publisher of Yellow Pages directories, is hoping to raise at least £5,000 for locally based development organisation CARE International this summer by participating in its Three Peaks Challenge. The event takes place on August 17 and 18 and the team, comprising seven walkers and a back-up team of two, will scale the three highest mountains in the UK – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – within 24 hours.

This year, participants will be joined on the second day by TV survival expert, Ray Mears, who will cheer the teams home to the finishing line at Snowdon.

Yell team members have been busy training in preparation for the event. Six team members recently completed the London to Brighton cycle ride, stretching just over 90K, another trekked across Nepal, while one team member took part in a 5K fun run in Oxford. Future fundraising activities will include a golf day, an auction and traditional cake sale.

Some team members are mountain veterans, having previously completed the gruelling challenge, while others are complete novices. First-timer, Louise Chapman, senior marketing executive at Yell, is looking forward to the challenge. She said: “Although the event will be very gruelling, especially for us newcomers, it does have its benefits. First and foremost, we will be raising a significant amount of money for CARE. Secondly, the challenge has generated a tremendous team spirit, not only amongst those undertaking the challenge, but the many others who are providing support in fundraising and organising logistical elements.”
