A ‘BIG TICK’ for Yell named as a finalist for national award - 9 June 2003
Yell, the international directories business based in Reading, is announced as a finalist in Business in the Community Awards for Excellence 2003, the UK’s most prestigious national awards for companies able to demonstrate the positive impact of their business on society through community programmes and business practices.Yell is among only five companies to be a finalist for the Business in the Environment Award, sponsored by National Grid Transco. The awards are supported by influential partners including the Financial Times and Department of Trade and Industry.
To mark the company’s achievements, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will formally present Yell with its BIG TICK mark at an event held at Lancaster House, London on Thursday 12 June. The BIG TICK can only be used by companies that have reached a measurable standard of excellence illustrating its position as an ‘Example of Best Practice’ in the field of corporate responsibility.
The Business in the Environment Award recognises innovative environmental performance integrated into a company’s sustainable development strategy, delivering proven business benefits. Yell’s environmental policy commits the business to continuous improvement on objectives to reduce, re-use and recycle.
Environmental champions support a green transport plan and encourage reduction, reuse and recycling of resources in the company’s offices. Yell works closely with its typesetters, printers and delivery agents to reduce the impact of the Yellow Pages directory and supports the Directory Recycling Scheme to work with local authorities to increase directory recycling by households. The Yellow Woods Challenge encourages schools to recycle old directories in return for environmental education materials and raises funds for the Woodland Trust.
John Condron, chief executive of Yell, said: “We’re delighted to be a finalist in the Business in the Environment Award and be recognised with a BIG TICK. As a company, we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and take great pride in our achievements, both internally and externally. I would like to thank all Yell people and suppliers for helping us bring our environmental policy to life in so many exciting ways.”
Julia Cleverdon, CVO, CBE, chief executive of Business in the Community, said: “Companies achieving the BIG TICK in our Awards for Excellence should be very proud of their achievement. I congratulate them all as examples of best practice. They have come through a rigorous and independently assured assessment process and have emerged as truly inspiring case studies delivering great benefit to wider society through their programmes and partnerships. We will enthusiastically use them to encourage other companies to improve their positive impact on society.”
The results of Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence 2003 will be announced at a Gala Dinner, sponsored by ScottishPower, to be held on Thursday 10 July 2003.
