Yellow Pages to introduce two new directories for Shrewsbury, Telford and Hereford areas - 28 November 2003

Yellow Pages today announced that its plans to create two new directories from the current Shrewsbury, Hereford & Mid Wales directory are to go ahead, following extensive public consultation earlier this year.

In response to a range of views expressed during consultation, Yellow Pages is making a number of changes to its original proposals. This will ensure that the new directories - a Shrewsbury, Telford & Mid Wales Yellow Pages and a separate Hereford Yellow Pages - are directly tailored to the interests and needs of businesses and directory users.

Under the original proposal, Church Stretton, Clun, and Craven Arms would have been included in the proposed directory for the Hereford area and part of mid-Wales - the new Hereford directory. However, during the consultation it became clear that the majority of businesses and users there regarded Shrewsbury as their natural retail and business centre.

These three towns and surroundings areas will now therefore be covered by the new Shrewsbury, Telford & Mid Wales directory. Its title will include ‘Telford’ following feedback underlining its role as a key centre of commerce in the area.

In addition, the majority of businesses and directory users in and around Aberystwyth said they would prefer to maintain links to areas to their north and with Shrewsbury. The Aberystwyth area will now also be covered by the new Shrewsbury, Telford & Mid Wales directory.

The coverage area of this new Yellow Pages directory will include Aberystwyth, Machynlleth, Oswestry, Telford and Newtown.

The new Hereford directory will cover an area including Llandrindod Wells, Rhayader, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye.

The moves reflect changes in population and in the distinct communities of Shrewsbury, Telford, Hereford and mid-Wales which have meant that shopping habits and travel patterns have altered significantly. Research conducted prior to the public consultation exercise indicated that new, community-focused directories would prove even more useful for directory users and businesses.

Richard Duggleby, head of external relations at Yell, publisher of Yellow Pages, said: "I’m delighted by the overall response to our plans. We are making changes that are clearly in tune with the needs and wishes of people living and working in and around Shrewsbury, Telford, Hereford and mid-Wales.

"We will ensure that Yellow Pages - the UK’s leading classified directory - remains as relevant as possible to their needs."
