Two new Yellow Pages directories to be introduced in the Hull and York areas - 27 May 2004
Yell today announced that its plans to introduce new Yellow Pages directories in the Hull and York areas are to go ahead following extensive public consultation this year. The proposals mean that for the first time homes and businesses in the city of Hull and its immediate area will receive a Yellow Pages directory published by Yell. This is a significant development for Yell as it will now deliver across the whole of the UK for the first time since publication of its original Yellow Pages directory in 1966.
Following a positive response during consultation, the existing York Yellow Pages directory will be split to create two new editions, ensuring that the “one and only Yellow Pages” reflects strongly the needs of both users and advertisers.
A new York, Harrogate & Scarborough Yellow Pages directory will cover an area including the city of York and the communities of Harrogate, Ripon, Scarborough, Goole and Selby. The other, a Hull & East Yorkshire Yellow Pages directory, will focus on an area including the city of Hull and stretching up the east coast from Withernsea to just north of Bridlington and westwards to include Driffield and Market Weighton. The new directories will be published in February 2005.
As part of the consultation exercise, Yell sought the views of users, advertisers, business figures and political representatives including local councillors and MPs.
As a result of feedback, the original proposal has been altered so that businesses and traders in and around Scarborough will be included in the York directory rather than the one for Hull. This reflects the views of the majority of advertisers and users in the Scarborough area.
The final plans reflect changes both in population and the distinct communities in the Hull and York areas which have meant that shopping habits and travel patterns have altered significantly. It also recognises the importance of Hull for the provision of services to nearby communities.
Richard Duggleby, head of external relations at Yell, publisher of Yellow Pages, said: “I’m delighted with the response to our proposals and we are now implementing changes that are clearly in tune with the needs and wishes of people living and working in the Hull and York areas.
“Future delivery of a Yellow Pages directory for the first time in the city of Hull and the immediate area is an important development for Yell. It gives advertisers a wider ‘shop window’ for displaying their goods and services and means directory users have the opportunity of greater choice when selecting a business or trader.
“We aim to be the best information source for goods and services and these changes will ensure that Yellow Pages – the UK’s leading classified directory – is as relevant as possible to people’s needs.”
