Yell Information Technology Team wins top UK award - 12 November 2004

Yell, the international directories business, has won a top UK computing industry award for the excellent performance of its Information Technology Services group.

The 240-strong UK team was judged ‘IT Department of the Year’ in the prestigious Computing magazine Awards for Excellence 2004. Now in their twelfth year, the awards recognise the very highest standards of achievement, and are the most renowned and sought after honours in the UK IT sector.

The accolade of ‘IT Department of the Year’ is awarded annually to the IT team in any private or public sector organisation that consistently proves its excellence in delivery and support of IT services.

Yell’s win recognises its operational excellence in service management, its innovative technology solutions for internal processes and bringing products to market, as well as its framework for the way it works with all stakeholders.

The other category finalists were a team from the Department for Works and Pensions’ Compensation Recovery Unit and the IT team from Loyalty Management UK, which operates the UK loyalty programme Nectar.

John Satchwell, operations director at Yell, said: “I’m delighted by this great win which is a superb acknowledgement of the first class IT service this vital team provides to Yell. I’m sure it will inspire all those involved to raise performance to even higher levels.”

The 2004 award was presented to Yell at a recent ceremony, hosted by Computing, attended by leaders from corporate business and government.

The IT honour continues a winning streak for Yell, whose public relations team has also picked up two top awards at the PR Week Awards 2004. It was honoured for its highly successful work with Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The campaign ‘Words Worth Reading’, a world record breaking poetry reading which was held as part of the charity’s annual Daffodil Campaign, was named as the ‘Best Not for Profit campaign’.

Gidon Freeman, executive editor of PR Week, said: "Words Worth Reading was an excellent campaign that really shifted the needle on what it is possible to achieve through non-profit PR."

Yell also received a Highly Commended award in the ‘Best Use of Research’ category, for its examination of classification changes within the Yellow Pages directory.
