Yell.com sponsors major national Internet safety campaign - 27 October 2005
Yell.com today announced that it was one of the founding sponsors of a high profile national campaign to help consumers use the Internet safely.Called ‘Get Safe Online’, the campaign is a collaboration of government and private sector companies, working together to educate consumers on the growing risk of Internet security threats, e-crime and online fraud. Other company sponsors for the campaign include BT, Dell, ebay, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, MessageLabs, Microsoft and securetrading.
A report from Get Safe Online to support the campaign launch reveals that more than three quarters of the UK’s population (83%) don’t know enough about protecting themselves online. The Get Safe Online campaign will not only raise public awareness of the issues but also provide solutions through a new website: www.getsafeonline.org
Yell.com launched almost a decade ago and has rapidly grown to become a leading UK local search engine and online advertising medium.
Dr Eddie Cheng, president of Yell.com, said: “With a database of around two million UK businesses and services and more than 150,000 advertisers we are a major online brand. It is important that Yell.com helps to promote industry issues to its users and advertiser base.
“Many small businesses may not be aware of all the security issues which they could face when advertising and trading online. The campaign aims to educate and encourage UK consumers and businesses to follow three simple steps:
‘Protect yourself, Protect your PC and Protect your business’.
Visitors to the Get Safe Online website will be able to access simple tips and up-to-date information to help gain the advice they need to use the Internet safely.
