All abroad – May is top month for a new life overseas - 25 May 2007

Yell.com, the UK’s local search engine, has identified the days on which people in the UK want to leave the country, forever! Perhaps because our weather is just not to be trusted, it’s around this time of year the nation starts thinking of setting up home overseas. According to Yell.com, May 25 and 30 are the days we’re most likely to start planning a permanent move abroad.

Extensive analysis by Yell.com’s data experts examined what users searched for in 2006 as a way of discovering what we are likely to search for in the year ahead – and when.

Late May was the most popular time for people planning to move out of the UK, as Yell.com site traffic showed peaks in emigration-related search terms such as ‘relocation’, ‘overseas property’, ‘embassies’ and ‘consulates’ during this time.

Nick Witham at PSS International, an international removal and relocation firm, said: “Spring is a key time for change and it’s at this time of year we see an increase in people asking us to help them relocate to a new country. A lot of our clients would like to experience proper summer weather all year round.”

The findings also revealed some more unusual trends for the remainder of the year:

  • In July it'll be eco a go-go as we finally go green with more searches for 'solar energy' on the 31st than on any other day in the year.
  • August is a month for celebrations as the nation searches for party organisers on the 8th.
  • November sees us get spiritual with peaks for places of worship searched on the 6th and 24th.
  • Then we'll be wrapping the year up in December by unwrapping ourselves. Despite the drop in temperature, the hottest time to search for 'naturism' is on December 7th!

Alicia Andrews, head of Yell.com, said: “Yell.com is the first port of call for many people seeking a business or service to help with life-changing decisions, such as moving house – even if that house isn’t in the UK. Our data has revealed some unexpected peaks in searches which occur at surprising points throughout the year. These usage trends point to the notion that a lot of UK residents are contemplating these big decisions at the same time as each other.”
