Yell.com reveals the UK's favourite stores and brands - 20 March 2007
Tesco has beaten other popular UK brands as the most searched for on Yell.com, with thousands of consumers going online to check out where their nearest store is, according to new data from the UK's local search engine.Analysis of the most searched for brands in the UK over the past twelve months revealed the nation’s favourite clothing, motoring and gadget brands with Gap, Ford and Apple topping their respective industry charts. The overall brand leader however was Tesco, with details of its stores being requested more than any other brand in the UK.
Yell.com’s study revealed that getting to the supermarket to do the regular shop is clearly top of mind for UK households, as Asda and Morrisons also featured in the overall top ten.

Yell.com has a strong reputation as the place to go to find local service providers, with all sorts of businesses from chimney sweeps to solar panel installers, toy shops to cake decorators. With new keyword search and web-crawl features built in, you can also search by brand name to find local stockists, your closest store and links to online shopping if you wish to shop from home.
Eddie Cheng, president of Yell.com, said: “People are already used to using Yell.com to access vital business information such as contact numbers and maps, but now many more are searching for specific brand names. If a user searches for “iPod”, for example, our intelligent search will check through advertisers’ websites to find the nearest stockist so they can buy one. Searches like this that tell us which brands are top of the consumer charts.”
A Nation of Car Lovers
Five car brands make it into the top 10 with Ford being firm favourite. According to the car brand chart, UK consumers would love to bag a Jag - the brand has climbed steadily up the search chart over the past year from eight to six.
Fashion Fads
This season, the Gap range will be widely sported in the UK if the number of searches for the store is anything to go by. However, the fashion chart is fickle, as in June 2006 Primark reigned supreme, but its crown then slipped and it went to number two at the end of 2006 with Gap claiming the number one spot.
Changing trends
It’s not just fashion that’s changeable as the charts reveal shifts in preferences on the high street and in technology too.
- Nintendo's Wii has made waves in the technology chart with the brand clawing its way up from eight to six over the past year thanks no doubt to shoppers trying to beat product shortages by searching online, before hitting the shops
- Findings also show that Marks & Spencer has slipped down the “most searched for” high street chart from seven to nine, while interior design obsessed consumers seem to prefer Swedish furniture store Ikea which has jumped from nine in the ranks to a healthy six
