Data Publishers Association honours Yell Group CEO John Condron with inaugural lifetime achievement award - 16 January 2008

The Data Publishers Association last night (Tuesday) awarded John Condron, chief executive of Yell Group plc, its inaugural George Henderson lifetime achievement award, recognising individuals who have made a major contribution to the UK data and directory publishing industry.

The citation states: “The George Henderson award is the DPA's new annual award recognising individuals who have made an immense and lasting contribution to our industry. John Condron, Chief Executive Officer of Yell Group plc, is just such a person. John joined the Yellow Pages division of BT in 1980, assuming ever increasing responsibility until he was appointed Managing Director in 1994.

“John has been the driving force behind the many significant milestones in Yell's development ever since. The acquisition of Yellow Book in the US and subsequent expansion into 47 states, the separation of Yell from BT, the listing of the company on the London Stock Exchange and entry into the FTSE100, winning the European Quality Award twice, the acquisition of TPI in Spain, twice winning the Queen's Award for Enterprise - these are just a few of the groundbreaking achievements John has led. John has overseen the growth of Yell from a small division of BT to the £2 billion turnover plc and international force that it is today.

“Many of these achievements were among the firsts for our industry, leading the way for others to follow. The expansion of directory operators overseas, attracting private equity interest to directory businesses, building awareness of the directory industry amongst media sector analysts and other audiences - all these are fairly commonplace today thanks to John's pioneering efforts.

“John was Chairman of the DPA from 1999 to 2003 helping our association thrive in a period when directories and databases were still perhaps the poor cousins of the media world. John has also been a member of the UK Government's Advisory Committee on Advertising and Chairman of the Jurors for the European Foundation for Quality Management's European Quality Awards.”

“His contribution to Yell, to the directories sector and to UK industry was recognised with the award of a CBE in the New Year's honours list and there can be no doubt that John is a highly deserving winner of our inaugural lifetime achievement award.”

To mark the award John Condron was presented with a crystal trophy by Jerry Gosney, chairman of the DPA, at the RAC Club, London attended by over 130 leading figures from the UK data and directory publishing industry.
