Etak and Yellow Pages Plan To Link Maps With Addresses Across Great Britain - 1 October 1998

Etak The Digital Map Company Limited, a world leader in digital mapping and Yellow Pages, a division of BT, today announced plans to cooperate on the development of digital maps enhanced with classified business information covering Great Britain.

The companies plan to integrate digital maps produced by Etak with business listings and places of interest provided by Yellow Pages.

Business listings and places of interest have been assigned a latitude and longitude, enabling their locations to be accurately pinpointed and displayed on a map.

"This alliance will enable businesses to access product offerings from two of the best known companies in the industry" said Nicola Babin, managing director for Etak Europe operations. "The pooling of Etak and Yellow Pages’ data and technology offers a new value-added database for applications requiring routing, directions, map displays or other types of location based information."

Etak has been a supplier to the UK-based Yellow Pages’ Internet web site (www.yell.co.uk) for two years. During that time, a strategic relationship has been established and as a result of this, Yellow Pages and Etak have agreed to pool their expertise and launch joint projects into the UK market.

"We have a good working relationship with Etak and I am delighted that this cooperation has resulted in us jointly launching new products and services into the marketplace to benefit our customers," said John Condron, managing director of Yellow Pages.

The maps include all roads, streets and alleyways plus landmarks, parks and water features. They are cartographically enhanced, providing greater detail and accuracy and have a more realistic appearance than other digital maps.

Etak is the premier publisher of location-based technology and digital maps for in-vehicle information systems, mobile traveller information systems, real-time traffic services, utility damage prevention and commercial business geographics markets. Etak maps cover the United States and mainland Great Britain. Etak technology and maps are used within various web sites, in a wide range of routing and location-based services and on PC’s and handheld devices for applications in the home, office or car.

Yellow Pages provides a range of classified business information in the form of printed directories and electronic media to the UK market. Its internet web site at www.yell.co.uk offers a comprehensive database including an online version of Yellow Pages plus shopping and entertainment area, a UK web directory and soon to be launched is an online travel service.
