Yellow Pages Joins Green Winners - 12 May 1999

Yellow Pages has been awarded full certification to ISO 14001 - the international standard for environmental management which has been issued to just over 700 companies in the UK.

The good news came from the British Standards Institute following an extensive audit of the company’s sites and activities. Yellow Pages employs over 3000 people across its head offices in Reading and Slough and in regional and canvass sales offices from Scotland to Southampton and Birmingham to Belfast. A network of environmental representatives in each of the regional offices helped make sure everyone was aware of Yellow Pages environmental policy and was putting the 3R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) into practice.

This latest honour builds on the company’s initial success in 1998 when the Reading head offices, the directory production and directory recycling processes were registered to ISO 14001 in a record-breaking eight weeks.

John Condron, managing director of Yellow Pages, said: "We were aiming for full registration by the end of 1999. The speed with which our environmental programme was rolled out and taken on board by our people was breathtaking."

The award was presented to John Condron by Special Envoy to the Director General of UNESCO, Professor Robert Swan, who added: "These are confusing times for all people on the environment and it’s very important that industry and business show leadership. Excellent team effort ensured Yellow Pages’ ISO14001 success months ahead of schedule - that is leadership."

Yellow Pages is supporting Swan and his Mission Antarctica project which aims to remove 1000 tonnes of rubbish from this unique environment and return it to its natural beauty. Closer to home, Yellow Pages understands that registration to ISO 14001 is not a one-off process and is committed to continuous improvement and assessment.
