Alan backs blooming bulbs for Marie Curie Immediate release Date of issue: April 2001 - 1 May 2001

Alan Titchmarsh is asking the public to dig deep into their pockets to help raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

He wants to see millions of blooming daffodils next spring in support of the charity which combines cancer care with research.

In a brand new promotion, thousands of boxes containing special packs of ‘Trumpet’ daffodil bulbs and planters will be available, in return for a donation, at garden centres and DIY stores across the UK in September and October.

The promotion is sponsored by Yellow Pages, part of Yell, whose CEO, John Condron, said: "Cancer is a major cause for concern in many parts of the world, and Marie Curie Cancer does a tremendous amount to raise awareness and bring hope and comfort to sufferers. We’re delighted to continue our support for Marie Curie Cancer Care and to join Alan in this new fundraising initiative."

Alan said: "The daffodil is the emblem of Marie Curie Cancer Care because it is a universal symbol of hope. This scheme is a wonderful way for all of us -whether we have a garden, window box or even just a flower pot - to support this worthwhile cause."

"With everybody’s help, Britain will be awash with daffodils during next year’s March-long Marie Curie Daffodil Campaign and thousands of pounds will be raised for the charity’s home nursing, hospice and research work."
