Assembly member launches Cardiff Yellow Pages Schools Recycling Campaign - 17 November 2001
Welsh Assembly member Lorraine Barrett is officially to launch the Cardiff Yellow Pages schools recycling campaign at 2.30pm on December 5th at Woodlands High School.More than 30 Cardiff schools are participating in the campaign, which is aims to recycle old Yellow Pages – showing fish on the front cover - from schools, homes and businesses in Cardiff.
The Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages, is offering £500 in cash prizes to the school that collects the most Yellow Pages and the school that collects the most directories per pupil head.Arts and science-based workshops run at either the National Museum in Cardiff or in schools are also being offered as prizes, in an initiative being sponsored by Careers Wales (Cardiff and Vale).
“Once again, Cardiff Waste Forum is taking the lead on recycling something every household has. Not only is this a novel way of helping people dispose of a bulky item but the waste product is then re-used in a very imaginative way,” said Lorraine Barrett AM, Cardiff Central.
The campaign, which is being organised by Cardiff Waste Forum, is a substantial extension of last year’s successful Cardiff Yellow Pages recycling scheme in which 25 schools participated, as did many householders and businesses from the area.
This year, the campaign will involve schools, householders and businesses across four authority areas: Cardiff, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taff and the Vale of Glamorgan. In Cardiff, the public is being asked to recycle old Yellow Pages through either the greenbag scheme or through local skips at supermarkets. School and businesses are also being offered a free collection service if they have over 30 Yellow Pages to recycle.
Collected by Wastesavers Recycling, the directories will be taken for recycling into house insulation by local company, Excel Industries.
- The South Wales Yellow Pages recycling campaign is a partnership project between the four local authorities: Cardiff Waste Forum, The Directory Recycling Scheme, CYLCH, Severnside Recycling, Wastesavers Recycling, Career Wales (Cardiff and Vale), Excel Industries and The Environment Agency Wales.
