Britain the new Barbados?Loyal Brits Stay Local this Summer Reports Yell.com - 11 July 2001

Safety worries, rising holiday costs and fear of illness may prompt thousands of people to reconsider jetting off on an exotic summer holiday this year with many Britons preferring to holiday in the UK.

The ‘Home or Away’ study, carried out on behalf of Yell.com, examined holiday makers’ attitudes towards taking UK and international holidays this summer. The research found that UK holiday makers are very loyal and have not been put off taking a UK break by foot and mouth (only 8 percent cited it as a concern). In fact, more people were worried about their safety whilst holidaying abroad. Nearly a quarter of respondents highlighted safety concerns and one in five cited ‘fear of illness’ as reasons for staying in the UK this year.

The Yell.com survey found that Brits really do prefer to stay in the UK, 20 percent of respondents had never taken a holiday abroad, whilst a further 20 percent spend the majority of their holidays in the UK. The variety of things to do (25 percent), value for money (20 percent) and, amazingly, the UK weather (20 percent) were stated as the main reasons to holiday in the UK. According to the Yell.com study the top UK holiday destinations include: Scotland, Cornwall, Dorset and Devon, the Lake District and London.

The study follows the launch and development of Yell.com's UK Breaks and Travel sections that offer the inside guide on where to go and what to do this summer whether at home or away.

Yell.com’s UK Breaks section allows the public to choose and plan UK breaks and days out with minimum effort by offering many related services, including an accommodation locator, five day weather forecast, a days out guide and links with Railtrack, National Express, Ferry Savers and Expedia to plan and book transport.
