Online games sites fight it out in the next stage of the Yell.com/Awards 2001 - 10 September 2001

Competition in the online games market has never been so fierce and today the battle to claim a prestigious Yell.com/Award moves up a level as the shortlisted sites are revealed. Out of thousands of nominations, just five websites have been shortlisted for the Best Games Site in the Yell.com/Awards 2001- the people’s choice of the ‘best on the Net’. The shortlisted sites are dreamshares.co.uk, totalgames.co.uk, sheepgames.co.uk, freeloader.co.uk and smiliegames.co.uk.

The shortlist reflects the variety of online games now on offer, from those with technically advanced graphics available on freeloader.co.uk, to games that can be played by all ages and abilities on smiliegames.co.uk. The people behind the sites are just as diverse - dreamshares.com is run by a student who originally created it as a game to play with his mates. On the other hand, totalgames.net is designed by hardcore gamers, for hardcore gamers.

These websites have now entered the second phase of the judging process where a panel of high profile media judges will decide which will win a prestigious Yell.com/Award 2001.

John Condron, CEO of Yell, said: “It’s been another great year for the Yell.com/Awards and with an incredible 50% increase in nominations. The Websites that have been shortlisted in the Best Games Site category should be proud of this achievement - they truly do represent the people’s choice of the best on the Net.”

The judges now face the difficult task of selecting one winner in each of the twelve categories. The winning Websites will be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony, hosted by Graham Norton, at the Atlantis Gallery in London on 3 October 2001. Sonique and Talvin Singh will be performing at the awards ceremony.
