Save the Traditional Weekend - 10 July 2001

People in Newcastle would not give up their traditional weekend for anything! In an independent survey conducted on behalf of Yellow Pages, 63 per cent of those surveyed said they want to hang on to the traditional weekend, rather than replacing it with any two days off they choose. This is in contrast to the preference of nearly half of the UK population, 46 per cent, who would rather scrap the traditional weekend because they think it is both inconvenient and out of step with modern lifestyles.

The national survey, conducted by the David Lewis Consultancy, confirmed that weekends and leisure time continue to be vitally important to the people of Newcastle. 56 per cent said they ‘do their best to balance a successful career with a family life and are good at juggling the two.’ Only 22 per cent considered a career more important than family life and were prepared to sacrifice leisure activities for career ambition.

The lifestyle survey was conducted on behalf of Yellow Pages to launch the 2001 directory with its new fluffy chick design on the front cover. Pop chicks the Atomic Kittens launched the new-look directory nationally on 1st July and the Newcastle directory will be delivered to households across the city this week. 78 new chick directories in all will be rolled-out across the UK throughout 2001. Inside the new directory are thousands of classifications to help make the most of any weekend break, whichever days of the week it may fall on.

The people of Newcastle know how to make the most of their valued weekend break. The majority, 20 per cent, enjoy visiting live sporting events, 16 per cent chose the relaxing option of a mini-break in a hotel, while only 3 per cent preferred cultural activities like visiting a museum or gallery.

Whether you’re planning a mini-break, looking for outdoor adventure, in search of some culture, or need to amuse the kids for the day, the Yellow pages directory is there for the fun things in life, from Nature Parks and Water-skiing, to Carting and Karaoke. Inside the directory you’ll find colourful, easy-to-use guide sections including an ‘Eating Out Guide’ to find your favourite restaurants, a ‘City Guide’ and a ‘Wedding Guide’ to make sure you’re special day goes without a hitch.

So, whatever the future of the British weekend, Yellow Pages is the ultimate local guide to help you ‘find the fun things in life’ and get the most out of your leisure time.
