Yell Offers Children a Slice of Office Life - 27 April 2001

Yell, home of the Yellow Pages directory, played host to local schoolchildren on Thursday at its Reading, Slough, Birmingham and Manchester offices, as part of National Take Our Children to Work Day.

This is the sixth year Yell has supported the event, formerly known as Take Your Daughters to Work Day. The day primarily gave schoolchildren an insight into the world of work, especially in areas where men traditionally outnumbered women in the past.

Girls and boys between the ages of 11 and 15 saw their parents working in a real business environment. A range of interesting learning experiences were on offer - for example, young people were encouraged to put their IT skills to use on Yell.com, design an advert and quiz Yell people about their work.

Children attending were predominantly sons and daughters of Yell employees and they shadowed their mothers and fathers to gain a better understanding of what an adult workplace was like. In return, children gained invaluable experience working for one of the UK’s most famous brands and received a certificate and goody bag to commemorate the day.

Yell Education Liaison Manager Denyse Coles, who arranged the event said: "The day was a huge success, enjoyed by both children and parents. As a major employer it’s important we provide learning opportunities for the next generation. Parents enjoy sharing other aspects of their lives with their children and it’s great for children to understand what their parents do during their day at work."
