Yell, the international directories business, was today presented with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise by the Lord-Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire in an official ceremony at the company’s Reading headquarters. As The Queen’s official representative in Berkshire, the Lord-Lieutenant, Philip Wroughton, marked the company’s winning of the award for sustainable development by presenting Yell chief executive John Condron with a special lead crystal bowl.
A citation from The Queen was also presented to John Condron by the Lord-Lieutenant, after being read out by Cadet Sergeant Major Adam Marcham.
Yell was named in April as a winner of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its integrated approach to sustainable development – demonstrating outstanding commercial success whilst at the same time having work practices which benefited society, the environment and the economy.
To win the award, Yell showed continuous achievement in sustainable development. It demonstrated implementation of a large number of supporting initiatives involving employees, local communities and suppliers. These include, for instance, its work with councils and householders to increase recycling of Yellow Pages directories, promotion within the company of a culture of reducing, recycling and re-use of office materials, and sponsorship of Marie Curie Cancer Care campaigns.
Prior to today’s special presentation ceremony at the company’s Queens Walk head office attended by invited Yell employees, the Lord-Lieutenant was taken on a tour of a number of key departments.
