Yell wins Environmental Green Apple Award - 2 January 2003
Yell, the international directories business, has received a national Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice, in recognition of the company’s continued commitment to minimise the impact of Yellow Pages directories on the environment. Yell was runner-up in the Commerce and Industry category of the prestigious awards.Now in its ninth year, the Green Apple Award Scheme recognises, rewards and promotes environmental endeavours and initiatives at all levels. The scheme is one of Britain's major environmental campaigns and is organised by The Green Organisation – an independent environmental group - and supported by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Municipal Journal and the Institute of Wastes Management.
John Condron, chief executive officer of Yell, said: “We are delighted to have received this accolade. Managing the impact of our business on the environment is a key corporate objective and it is really encouraging that our efforts have been recognised in these prestigious awards.”
Yell’s award winning directory recycling scheme works with local authorities to develop, improve and promote opportunities for recycling Yellow Pages across the UK. The scheme ranges from providing grants to local authorities to assist in the purchase and siting of recycling banks, to setting up kerbside collections and also supports the Yellow Woods Challenge, a new and exciting schools recycling initiative.
This award closely follows Yell winning the Queens Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category, recognising the company achieving outstanding commercial success while at the same time ensuring its work practices benefited society, the environment and the economy. Yell won the award for its integrated approach to sustainable development, demonstrating that it lay at the heart of the company’s policies.
