Yell.com hits the spot with new maps service - 26 May 2006
Yell.com, the UK’s local search engine, has launched a new mapping service, to provide further flexibility to users planning travel routes online. The new service, part of an ongoing programme of site developments, is available from the homepage and offers large draggable maps for all locations in the UK, as well as directions for getting from any UK location to another either by car or on foot.
For the first time, Yell.com users can access maps as a standalone service and find directions between any two user defined locations or landmarks, not just those leading to a specific business listed on the site. Furthermore, users can specify if there are any locations they would like to travel via to reach their destination.
The maps will include aerial photography for England and Wales and the option to pinpoint the nearest car park and its tariffs. Visitors can also get specific directions to drive to the car park and then complete the rest of their journey on foot.
Yell.com conducted extensive research, while developing the new service, to identify user demands. Working with industry leaders Multimap, and in partnership with GetMapping (aerial photography), the resulting service combines user friendliness and ease of use with a high quality of map detail.
Eddie Cheng, president of Yell.com said: “As a leading local search site we have focused on ensuring we give users the best possible experience when looking for local information, whether that’s finding a business or retrieving maps or directions. Our new map service extends the utility of the site by providing real time saving and convenience for consumers, giving people another reason to click on Yell.com.”
