Yell wins International Green Apple Environment Award - 29 November 2006
Yell, the international directories business, has been awarded a top accolade for environmental best practice, recognising its efforts in directory production, directory recycling and office resources.Yell received ‘Green Champion’ status for the first time at the International Green Apple Environment Awards. ‘Green Champion’ status is the highest award available, given for recognising the benefits of environmental best practice and acting as a leading example.
Only 16 Green Champion Awards were presented to businesses this year, with Yell coming top of the paper and packaging category.
Now in its twelfth year, the Green Apple Awards are organised by The Green Organisation and established as one of the biggest environmental awards schemes in the world. Entries are welcomed from any company, council or community from any country that is making an effort to protect or enhance the environment, with categories to cover every sector of commerce, industry and local government. This year almost 1,000 entries were received overall.
Winners were presented with their trophies at the Tower of London by Professor David Bellamy, Britain's leading environmental personality.
Denise Marlow, Yell’s head of publishing, said: “Yell’s commitment to environmental sustainability has been further recognised by winning Green Champion status.
“We continually look for ways in which we can make a difference, including using lighter grade paper, higher recycled fibre content for the Yellow Pages and improving the opportunities for recycling old directories.”
Green Apple organiser Roger Wolens said: ''Yell's environmental responsibility programme has further boosted their green achievements this year. Our objective is to not only recognise and publicise various environmental endeavours, but to also help others follow examples set by organisations such as Yell.”
The event was supported by Tree Appeal, who has pledged to plant trees dedicated to all the winners to make the day's event carbon free.
